"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." — Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)
In the midst of life's challenges, it can be easy to see those around us—friends, family, colleagues—as the source of our frustrations and pain. We may find ourselves caught up in conflicts, disagreements, and misunderstandings that seem all too personal. But the Word of God reminds us that our true battle is not with flesh and blood.
Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, reveals a profound truth: the real struggle is spiritual. It's a battle against forces that are not visible to the naked eye, forces that operate in the unseen realm to stir up division, confusion, and strife. These powers work subtly, influencing thoughts, emotions, and even the atmosphere around us.
When we begin to understand that the true enemy is not the person standing before us, but the spiritual influence behind the conflict, it changes everything. That argument with a loved one, the offense from a friend, or even the harsh criticism from a stranger—these are often fueled by forces that aim to disrupt our peace and break our unity.
Instead of fighting back with anger or resentment, we are called to a different strategy. Ephesians 6:13-17 outlines the armor of God:
-
The Belt of Truth: Stand firm in what you know is true, regardless of the lies or confusion around you.
-
The Breastplate of Righteousness: Protect your heart by living in integrity and truth.
-
The Shoes of Peace: Be a peacemaker, walking in the assurance of God’s promises.
-
The Shield of Faith: Quench the fiery darts of the enemy with unwavering belief in God's protection.
-
The Helmet of Salvation: Guard your mind with the assurance of your salvation and identity in Christ.
-
The Sword of the Spirit: Use the Word of God as your weapon against lies and deception.
When you are aware of the true source of conflict, you can respond with spiritual authority instead of fleshly reactions. Prayer becomes your battleground, and worship becomes your weapon. Instead of engaging in verbal disputes, you engage in spiritual warfare. Instead of holding on to offense, you release forgiveness, knowing that bitterness only strengthens the enemy’s hold.
